Live Steam

Several years ago, I decided to try my hand at Live Steam. After acquiring several pieces of machine equipment, I started with simple projects such as a single cylinder stationary engine, a 3 cylinder marine engine, an 0-4-0 TICH (3/4") that I converted to an American type 0-4-0 with a sloped back tender, a Pacific and finally the La France pumper that you see below.

La France Fire Engine by Coles:
Scale: 1.5" = 1' 0"
18" high, 42" long with draft gear.
Horses are from "Barbie" painted as Dapple Grays.

The wheels and frame were cast from aluminum. The cylinders and pump were bronze castings; the chimney, valve covers, flywheel and damper were brass castings. These all had to be machined to the operating finished state you see here. The suspension for the pump and cylinders as well as all mechanical parts were fabricated from stainless steel. The draftgear for the horses was hand crafted out of oak with hand-formed brass trim. The horses are "Barbie's" and were primed and painted as Dapple Greys.

The engine was coal fired, pumping a steady stream of water from a 1/8" fire nozzle for a distance of 25 feet. The frame and wheels were painted fire engine red and I hand painted the gold pin striping. Everything was fabricated from scale nuts/bolts to oilers and hose fittings. The project took about five years to complete.

Eventually, I sold off all my models and equipment as I found that I had to make a decision between live steam and model railroading.

Corvettes

I have had the pleasure of having several Corvettes over the years starting with a 1980 dark blue, 1981 silver, 1985 two-tone silver, 1989 white, 1994 dark green, a 2000 Millenium Yellow and now a LeMans Blue 2005 C6.
